"The New Working Reality"...just what does this mean? From my perspective, it means that we might as well dig a hole and cover ourselves up. I truly feel sorry for the current generation of college graduates who will end up paying a terrible price for the majority of their working lives as pay is tied to beginning salaries. I would love to return to the workplace but most jobs pay about 60-75% less than I was making when I left the workforce in 2005. With the economy being in the wretched condition that it is, I may not have any choice but to accept this reduced standard of pay should I be one of the fortunate to actually get a job in 2010.
I can't help but wonder what kind of psychological damage this environment will inflict on America?

I agree with the article's sobering statement that Americans should not expect their careers to return to prerecession levels. However to validate that remark, I'm wondering if you can direct me to a study or survey that indicates white collar professionals previously earning $75K/yr - $95K/yr having exhausted their unemployment assistance and are now employed for $9/hr - $11/hr? Obviously this scenario presents a negative effect on discretionary income but does however give us specious report at reduced unemployment levels.
